Romsey Primary School and Nursery

Parent Governor Vacancy

The RPS Governing Board has a vacancy for a Parent Governor

Parent Governors are elected by the parents and are vital to the work of the Governing Body.  We are seeking nominations from any person that has a parental responsibility for a child or children at RPS and would be interested in standing as a Governor.

Whilst representing parents and understanding issues from a parental perspective, it will still be necessary to see the school from a wider viewpoint.

Become a school governor

Governors positively work with the school, holding the school leaders to account.  We therefore seeking a person who:

  • Is interested in understanding the school at a strategic level and how this can offer the best possible environment for the children.
  • Has an open and enquiring mind, being able to listen and be willing to ask questions to ensure that the school is working effectively towards its vision.
  • Would like to be part of driving forward improvements.
  • Is able to work within a team.
  • Is able to offer up to around 20 hours per term to the role, in or outside of school hours.

By offering support and constructive challenge, governors gain a wider perspective to the strategic running of the school.  Responsibilities include:

  • Putting safeguarding first, for pupils and staff.
  • Ensuring that high standards of education are delivered.
  • Shaping and agreeing the policies of the school.
  • Understanding the school leadership, staffing, management and recruitment.
  • Setting and monitoring the school budget.
  • Monitoring performance.
  • Ensuring the school premises are safe, secure and a great environment for learning and for staff to work and develop their own careers.

Governors are volunteers and are all busy people!  We all have differing skills to offer value when working as a team to ensure that all the children, from the tallest to the smallest, loudest to the quietest, have the best possible experience at RPS.  No experience in education is needed, just a willingness to engage.  A variety of free training is provided.

We meet as a Board once every half term after school hours.  Governors are also linked to specific areas working with staff to gain a greater depth of knowledge for monitoring and reporting.  Such areas include safeguarding, behaviour, early years, health and safety, leadership, finance and the curriculum.

Commitment to the role requires participating in training, attendance and participation at meetings, the undertaking of monitoring visits during school hours to meet with staff linked to specific areas of responsibility and/or assisting other Governors as required.

Importantly a prospective Governor would bring the interest, enthusiasm and commitment to get involved, and can build relationships whilst working as part of a team.   A satisfactory DBS check will need to be completed.

Further information about the role of a governor can be found at: Governors | Romsey Primary School or www.hants.gov.uk/educationandlearning/governors.
