Our Governors
What is the role of the governing body?
Our governing body is made up of volunteers from the local community and the wider world of business, offering a diverse range of skills and views, bringing a breadth of experience to the team. We are required to have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:
-
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction,
-
Supporting and holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff,
-
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent,
Types of Governors
Parent Governor
Parent governors are elected by the school parents to provide a parental perspective. Parent governors are entitled to serve out their term of office even if their child has left the school.
Local Authority Governors
Local Authority Governors are nominated by the County Council primarily with a view to their commitment to high quality education and their ability to bring an independent perspective.
Staff Governors
Staff Governors include the Headteacher plus one other member of staff elected by and from amongst the teaching and non-teaching staff at the school.
Co-opted Governors
Co-opted Governors are appointed by the governing body based on the skills and experience that they have.
Associate Governors
Associate Governors are appointed by the governing body. They are not part of the governing body but are allowed to attend meetings and sit on committees and can be given voting rights. An associate governor is appointed to bring expertise and experience in a specific area to the governing body.
Our Governors: what do they do?
The Governing Body (GB), together with the Headteacher and senior staff, forms the School Leadership and Management Team. The GB works closely with the school staff to ensure that high standards are maintained in all aspects of school life. Although the governors’ role is a voluntary one, it has an important purpose in holding the school to account for standards of teaching, learning, behaviour and welfare, as well as for the management of the school’s finances, staffing and buildings. The GB appoints the Headteacher to whom the operational responsibility for the school is delegated.
The GB is therefore a key part of the system for school accountability, offering challenge and support to school staff. Governors help to form the School Development Plan and are responsible for monitoring its effectiveness.
Romsey Primary School is constituted to have 12 governors:

The full governing body consists of all governors who convene each half term. Each governor is associated with particular statutory elements of school life and areas of the School Development Plan, enabling them to robustly track progress towards the agreed objectives. They collaborate with staff members and engage with children during school visits. This approach allows governors to gain a deep understanding of the school and effectively challenge and support the staff. Additionally, governors participate in school events where they embrace the chance to interact with parents, staff, and students.
