Art

Why art?
Art is an essential part of a child’s education because it nurtures creativity, imagination, and self-expression. Through art, children develop problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and confidence in their ideas. It also supports emotional well-being and helps them understand different cultures and perspectives. By exploring art, pupils learn to think creatively—an ability that benefits every area of learning and prepares them for a world that values innovation.
Art intent
An RPS child will be engaged, inspired and challenged through drawing, painting, sculpting, printing, textiles and collage. The children will learn to understand the visual elements of art and develop their critical abilities. They will develop their techniques, ideas and observations in sketchbooks, using them to review and revisit ideas. They will be exposed to the work of great artists, craft makers and designers, both contemporary and in history.
Key art knowledge and skills
Our art curriculum helps children develop both knowledge and practical skills. They learn about the building blocks of art—such as colour, shape, texture, and pattern—and explore different materials like paint, clay, and collage. Pupils also discover famous artists and artworks from around the world, building cultural awareness and visual literacy.
Alongside this knowledge, children develop key skills: drawing, painting, and creating 3D models; experimenting with color and pattern; and learning to reflect on their own work and others’. Most importantly, art encourages creativity, confidence, and problem-solving—skills that benefit every area of learning.
How art is taught
Art in primary school is taught through a mix of practical activities and creative exploration. Children learn by experimenting with different materials—such as paint, pencils, clay, and collage—while developing skills in drawing, painting, and making 3D models. Lessons often start with looking at examples from artists and cultures to inspire ideas and teach key concepts like colour, shape, and texture.
Teachers guide pupils to plan their work, try out techniques, and reflect on what they’ve created.
